Robert Roland Whitehead, Sr., age 90, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 with his children at his bedside.
Mr. Whitehead or “Roland”as he was known by most, was born in Flora Mississippi on May 19, 1932 to John and Lela Whitehead. He was the fifth child of 11 children.
He grew up in Flora, MS and married the love of his life, Laura Ann Haynes, on August 5, 1950 and were married for 67 wonderful years. They moved to Canton and raised 6 devoted children: Ronnie, Kenny, Connie,Susie, Ann and Judy.
Mr. Whitehead was an honorable man who dearly loved his wife, his 6 children, his 10 grandchildren and his 17 great-grandchildren. He truly enjoyed it when any of them came to visit.
Mr. Whitehead spent most of his working years at Canton Ready Mix and Concrete as Supervisor/ Foreman. He retired in 1994 and enjoyed planting a vegetable garden every year until the age of 83 , but continued to enjoy cutting his grass and tinkering with his tractor and lawnmowers up until his passing. His favorite TV channel was
”Grit Channel” (40.3) where you could come in and catch Dad watching a western any time of the day or night. He loved his Westerns!! Also we learned through the years never bring up the subject of politics and Medicare or you would be in for a long, loud discussion, lol. He loved debating with my brother, Ronnie, over politics especially!!
Mr. Whitehead was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lela Whitehead, 5 brothers, 3 sisters, and his loving wife, Laura Ann Haynes Whitehead and his eldest son, Robert Roland Whitehead, Jr. (Ronnie).
Robert Whitehead leaves behind five (5) children; Kenneth Whitehead (Ginger), Connie Snow, Susie (Al) Culipher, Laura Ann Pugh, Judy Cook and Daughter-in-law Karen Whitehead( Ronnie); ten(10)
grandchildren: Candy Brown, John Roland Whitehead, Paige Breaux, Kristen Fulton, Josh Snow, Justin Snow, Daniel Culipher, Melanie Cox, Russell Cook, Sarah Berryhill and also 17 great grandchildren. He leaves one brother, Lee Whitehead and one sister, Mildred Queen, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in Mr. Whitehead’s name to Fellowship Christian Assembly Church, Canton Mississippi or the Methodist Rehabilitation Center, Jackson Mississippi.
The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Brian Scott Torrey for the wonderful care he provided to our Dad and Mom over the years and to Enhabit Home Health and Hospice Services for their special care and kindness these last three months. We would like to especially thank Ms. Anne Andrews, RN, whom he became very fond of and enjoyed her visits every week. The Whitehead family is forever eternally grateful to you all.
