He worked for the Mississippi State Game and Fish Department from 1961 to 1966, and also had a 45-year distinguished career with the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, during which time he served 8 years as State Conservationist in Mississippi, and later as the founding director of the Agricultural Wildlife and Conservation Center.

Mr. Heard was predeceased by his parents, seven siblings, and his first wife of 38 years, Nan Brantley Heard. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Myrna Heard, daughter Carla Cassandra (Frank) of Lake Worth, FL, and son Rev. Jerrard Heard of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by sister Mary Tom Aldridge of Burnsville, NC, and sister-in-law Virginia Heard of Florence, MS. He is further survived by stepchildren Cindy Graves (Bobby), of Starkville, MS, Matt Greene (Heather) of Heber Springs, Arkansas, Emily Norris (Justin), of Dexter, Missouri, Lisa Niebrugge (Harold), of Troy, Illinois, 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
