Obituary for Mamie Huie Joe
Mamie Huie Joe passed away on December 24, 2020 in her home in Ridgeland Mississippi at age 85 due to natural causes. Born in Greenville, MS in 1935 to parents Wong Wing and Lee Shee Wong (aka Lee Kin Sing), Mamie was the third of 4 children. She grew up living behind the family owned grocery store, working and following her older sister to dances held by the Lucky Eleven Club, a fraternity-like organization for the Chinese community of the delta. Extremely clever and bright, she skipped 7th grade and graduated from EE Bass High School in 1953. Losing a parent at any age is very difficult and the Wong family lost their patriarch when Mamie was in high school. From then on Mamie’s life was defined by seeking security and prosperity for herself and her family. She attained this through hard work and determination. She married Fee Joe of Boyle, MS, a co-founder of the Lucky Eleven Club, in 1954, moving to live with his family above their grocery store in Boyle. With her husband stationed in Japan with the US Air Force, she stayed in Greenville to be near the Air Force base hospital where their daughter, Lorri, was born in 1955. They moved to Memphis and bought a grocery store. After about a year of working long days, they decided to move to California where Mamie stayed home with Lorri while Fee found work in the booming aerospace industry. They settled in Anaheim where their second daughter, Tina, was born in 1965. When Tina started school, Mamie turned her attention to her own education, and earned an accounting degree from California State University Fullerton by taking courses in the evening. She started work as an auditor at the IRS and retired as a supervisor after 30 years at the Department of Treasury. Mamie had many hobbies, and she was a wonderful sewist, knitter, painter, and cook. She was well known to her family and friends for cooking Thanksgiving dinner, sometimes for 25 plus people. She loved to travel and her daughters remember family vacations traveling across the US and Canada in a camper van or RV. After retiring in 2000, she and her husband moved to Ridgeland, Mississippi, near other members of their family and long-time friends. She loved fu-yu persimmons and was proud of her persimmon tree, often sharing its bounty with friends and neighbors. Mamie was preceded in death by both of her parents, her older brother, Soo Ming Wong and older sister Mae Wing. She is survived by her younger sister Sue Lum, daughters, Lorri and Tina and granddaughter, Tristan and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements are being handled by Sebrell funeral home of Ridgeland, MS and remembrances can be posted on their website. She will be interred at Parkway Memorial Cemetery beside Fee, her beloved husband of 64 years. At her request, no services will be held. If you feel compelled, please send donations to The American Diabetic Association in Mamie’s name or any other cause you feel appropriate. The family wishes to thank friends and extended family who have supported us and helped us during this difficult time especially during the Pandemic.
