Shirley S. Treppendahl
August 14, 1940 to June 16, 2020
Shirley Sherrill Treppendahl was a woman way ahead of her times. In 1958, after graduating Morgan City High School with honors, she joined the United States Air Force and was stationed for 3 years at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. She logged over 3000 hours in a C118 as a MAT flight attendant (from 1958 to 1961), carrying service personnel, their dependents, and USO troops to assigned US bases in Europe: In or near London, Frankfurt, Paris and Madrid. They were fueled and sometimes had layovers in such places as Newfoundland, Iceland, Ireland, Scottland and the Azores.
Following these experiences, Shirley earned a BA and a MA in English, which she taught for 42 years in mainly Episcopal schools and later in public ones. She has lived in six states including Texas, Florida and California. She moved back to Mississippi near the end of her teaching career to be close her two daughters and lived mostly on the Ross-Barnett Reservior.
Upon retirement, Shirley became increasingly active in her church, St. Peter's by-the-Lake, and was highly involved in their community, study and service, including Cursillo. She was an avid reader, writer and poetess. She loved tending to her garden, socializing with friends and spending time with her two daughters and 5 grandchildren.
Shirley was predeceased by her mother, Dixie Irene Morrison, father, Woodrow Wilson Sherrill, and sister Donna Kay Aucoin Meranto. She is survived by two sisters, Ruthie Hardee and Paula Blanchard, two daughters, Christina Treppendahl and Liesl Treppendahl Riddick, and five grandchildren, Atticus Long, Henri Kate Long, Oliver Long, Ella Frances Long and Isadora Scott Riddick.
Shirley was a beautiful and brilliant woman, loved and adored by many. She will be deeply missed.
Shirley will be interred in the St. Peter's columbarium on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. This is a private service for family only. There will be a celebration of Shirley's life at a later date when we can gather together again.
