Obituary for Winfred "Art" Davis
Winfred Alton Davis passed peacefully in his sleep November 3rd, 2020 at Forrest General in Hattiesburg, MS. He was 91. Mr. Davis has many aliases, such as Art to his friends, Papaw Arch to his grandchildren and Dad. Art was born on June 7, 1929 in Water Valley, MS to the late John Winford Davis and Hattie Mae Coleman Davis.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force on December 20, 1950 and served in the Korean War as a Load Master and Air Craft and Engine Mechanic. After his service in the Air Force he served in the Air Force Reserves from 1956-1965 as a Flight Engineer and A and E Mechanic, as well as returning to work in General Aviation in Greenwood, MS. He then served in the Mississippi Air National Guard until 1973, while also working at Jim Hankins Air Service in Jackson, MS.
In 1977 he started his own business providing service and maintenance on Agricultural Aircraft and General Aviation Aircraft until he retired in 2015.
He, also, was a huge part in building and starting the Mississippi Wing of the Commemorative Air Force located in Madison, MS. He orchestrated and helped to put the Aircraft that can be seen in the Agricultural Museum in Jackson, MS.
He received various medals in the Air Force and many awards throughout his career, one of which is The Charles Taylor "Master Mechanic" Award presented upon his retirement by the FAA in 2015. These are just a few things our Dad brought to the Aircraft world. To say that we are very proud of him and his accomplishments in life is evident. He served his country and community with dignity, respect, and love.
He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, expertise of aviation, his wit, and work ethic with love from all of his family and friends. He will truly be missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Davis, and the following siblings, Ralph Davis, Charles Davis, Raymond Davis, Robert Davis, Jack Davis, Gene Davis, Rex Davis, Reba Davis, and Caroline Davis.
He is survived by his children; Tim (Shelby) Davis, Mitzi (Roger) Durham, Sheila (Rick) Buie, Scott (Cindy) Davis, Jennifer (Ronnie) Bagwell; as well as 9 Grandchildren; 7 Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and one brother Billy (Mary) Davis.
