Left her earthly home on February 18, 2017 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Born in Jackson,
MS on March 17, 1946, she was the first of five chil- dren born to Will Richard and Tressie Lee Tucker
Blackmon.
Miss Blackmon was a 1964 graduate of Central High School and graduated from Delta State College,
majoring in Art Education. She began a teaching career in Belzoni and then moved back to Jackson where she joined the staff of McCartyHolman / Jitney Jungle Stores of America as a graphics designer and rose to the position of Director of Advertising. After leav- ing that corporate position, she worked in management or non-profit organizations including Cystic Fibrosis and Prevent Blindness. Wilma
was compelled to go back to her original fulfilling vocation as an educator, challeng- ing and mentoring gifted stu- dents in the Madison County School System. As a bo- nus to her career she gained long summer vacations which were spent traveling extensively throughout the United States. For months
she would research and plan meticulously, creating de- tailed schedules for camp- ing and hiking treks with her companion and best friend, Glynda Austin. Upon their re- turn, Wilma would document
and catalog each summer adventure with photographs and elaborate commentary.
She was also an ordained minister and a member of Peace Community Church.
Unfortunately forced into early retirement in 2001, she survived a sudden and rare illness which caused
her to spend over seven months in ICU earning her the nickname ‘Miracle Lady’ bestowed by nuns at
St. Dominic Hospital. She fought multiple chronic dis- eases that resulted from that fierce attack and won an extra sixteen years be- yond her predicted life ex- pectancy. Her remarkable mind stayed sharp despite a long coma causing some short-term memory issues, but she was fully capable of studying and investigating new theories to suggest to her team of medical profes- sionals. Even during her final
weeks she outlined palliative care and gave instructions for family and friends to fol- low after her passing.
Miss Blackmon was pre- deceased by her parents and grandparents: B.B. and Fannie Fewell Blackmon and John N. and Beulah Lewis Tucker. She is survived by one sister, Sarah Kirby (Bruce) of Ridgeland, and
three brothers: Will Richard, Jr. (Nan) of Madison, Roger Dale (Linda) of Columbia, and John Benson of Flora. She also leaves to cher- ish her memory nephews and nieces: Patrick, Rich, Laura, Eric, John, and
Ryan Blackmon, Meagan Blackmon Avery, Russell Kirby, and Renee Kirby Strait as well as five great nieces and nephews. Per her request, a Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. Thoughts for her family may be sent to remembering_ wilma@usa.com.
