William Stephen (Steve) Terney, Sr., 91, of Jackson, died Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at Hospice Ministries. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Grace Bible Church with burial following at Parkway Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM Saturday at Grace Bible Church.
Mr. Terney was born on October 11, 1931, in Hattiesburg the son of the late Kathryne Rawls Terney and William Forrest Terney. A graduate of Hattiesburg High School in 1951, he continued his education at the University of Southern Mississippi where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration. He also was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order.
He began his career in the oil business with Conoco, serving in various positions in the marketing department in New Orleans, Lake Charles, and Jackson. Mr. Terney later accepted a position as Vice President of Pritchard Oil in Jackson. After selling to Marathon Oil, a new company, Ecol, Inc. was formed. Later, when Ecol was sold, he became Vice President of First Southeast Corporation, a real estate development company in Madison. The firm developed subdivisions in Madison County and the Clinton-Raymond area. After retirement, he was a consultant to Morris Petroleum, Inc., a Shell distributor.
Mr. Terney served in the Mississippi National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of Captain. He attended the Basic Officer Training Course at Ft. Benning, GA, and was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division.
He enjoyed spending time on land in Madison County that he jointly owned with his dear friend, the late Bob Marchetti, where he enjoyed walking in the woods, bush hogging, and fishing. He also enjoyed attending his Thursday morning men’s coffee group and Wednesday morning Bible Study.
Mr. Terney was a member of Grace Bible Church and an active member of Gideons International for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary McCaa Terney; children, William Stephen Terney, Jr. (Gulay) of The Woodlands, TX; Kathy Hickman (Garner) of Oxford, MS; grandchildren; Chase McCaa Chapman of Nashville, TN; Riana Terney Calvert (Hardy) of Washington, DC; Lamar Hickman (Nicole) of Hattiesburg, MS; and great-grandchildren, Reed Hickman and Ayla Claire Calvert.
Memorials may be made to Gideon’s International or Grace Bible Church.
