Obituary for William R. "Bill" McCandless
William Ronald (Bill) McCandless was born in Memphis, TN on December 7, 1949, to Milton Louis McCandless and Hilda Wasson McCandless Walton. On August 23, 2018, he died at Select Care Hospital, UMC, his brother and sister at his side. He was 68 years old and while having lived in the Jackson, Mississippi area more than 40 years, he was currently residing in Ridgeland.
Following the death of his father at age 5, Bill and his family moved from Memphis to Kosciusko, the place that became home. While growing up, Bill was active in sports, scouting and church. He graduated from Kosciusko High School in 1967, where he was elected most intellectual during his senior year. He earned a BS Degree in Business in 1971 from the University of Southern Mississippi, receiving the Crowne Zellerbach Scholarship Award and maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. He entered law school and in 1974 and received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law. He began his law career in private practice in Kosciusko where he got his feet plenty wet as he learned much from his very seasoned mentors. After several years and an unsuccessful bid for the MS House of Representatives, he relocated to Memphis to begin working for the US Army Corp of Engineers. His career included practicing law in private practice in Jackson, MS as well as working as an oil and gas landman for several years. Bill was a voracious reader and prided himself on his large collection of signed, first-edition novels. He also was an avid fan of the game of golf and could be found in front of his tv whenever a golf tournament was featured, usually a book in one hand and the remote in the other.
Bill was preceded in death by his very special grandmother, Bessie Wasson and grandfather, Zach Wasson, his mother, Hilda Wasson Walton in April 2018, and his father Milton Louis McCandless in 1955. He is survived by his twin brother, Joseph Donald (Joe) McCandless and his sister Susan (Susie) McCandless Andrews (Mike), stepsisters Karen Logan and JoAnn Boutwell, nephews Col (Ret) Mori Andrews, Sutton McRae, nieces Ashley Andrews Hartman (Dan) and Cile Andrews Adams, six great nieces and nephews, three aunts, and truckloads of first cousins.
A Memorial Celebration of Bill's life will be held with a visitation for family and friends at Sebrell Funeral Home on Monday, August 27, 2018, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to a charity of your choice.
