Obituary for William Douglas Mann
William Douglas “Billy” Mann, passed from this life on Tuesday, April 19, 2022. Mr. Mann succumbed to complications following a recent fall. Billy Mann was born on July 11, 1926, in Carthage, Mississippi. He matriculated in the Carthage public schools and attended Millsaps College where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. During his time at Millsaps he was also in the Navy as an officer trainee in the V-12 Program, which was a forerunner of ROTC. Also while attending Millsaps he met his future bride, Dorothy “Dot” Doty. They were married in 1951. After his father’s death, Billy and Dot moved to Carthage, Mississippi to take over the family Ford dealership. They moved to Jackson in 1970 where Billy was a broker at Merrill Lynch and Dot joined the first faculty of Jackson Prep. In the late 70s, Billy started a career in the oil business, which continued until his death. Billy was a life-long Republican, helping start the state party in the late 1950s, early 1960s, and serving as Secretary of the party. Other honors include induction into the Millsaps Sports Hall of Fame and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Unsung Heroes. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert William and Irma Mann. He is survived by his wife, Dot; his daughters Melissa Mann Irby (Randy Barton), Allyn Mann Ray (S.T.), and son William Douglas “Doug” Mann, Jr. (Janet); grandchildren Stuart M. Irby, Jr. (Elizabeth), Natalie Irby, Emily Ray Oswalt (Matt), Douglas Ray, Sydney Mann, and Will Mann; and great grandsons, Jacob Irby, Chalmers Irby, Saunders Irby, Thomas Hewitt Oswalt, Andrew Oswalt, and Matthew Douglas Oswalt. A celebration of life will be held at Northminster Baptist Church at 2:00 P.M., on Saturday, April 23, 2022, followed by an inurnment in the church’s collumbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to Northminster Baptist Church.
