Gene, Mr. Wood, Uncle Gene, Granddaddy, Daddy, Hun. Names only begin to tell the story of this man.
To many, he was Gene. A friend who was true. A friend who wanted to help in any way he could. A friend who worked hard and who could be counted on 100% in everything he did. A coin collector who loved to share and talk about it! With a quick wit that would bring a laugh in an instant.
To many, he was Mr. Wood. Always quick with a smile and you knew he was genuinely glad to see you. Coins for prizes in all the games that were played on Friday night game nights. The mixed nut concoction he always had at Monday night Bible study. The little children loved him. They loved the attention he gave them and the fun extras he always had available.
To a few he was Uncle Gene or cousin Gene. Family was so important to him. From the family reunions in Toccapola MS to reunions whereever he could get the most people together. Prizes were always a part and watermelon plentiful.
To 3 he was granddaddy. The BEST granddaddy that could ever be. Making a zip line on the land, potato cannon, go carts, hay rides, fishing, camping, grilled hot dogs, shooting guns, driving the tractor, attending school activities, working out with his grandson who was 55 years younger than him, "last tag" oh so many things. When Kelli married Austin, he knew he now had 4 grandchildren! Love, Sharing, Teaching. Always teaching.
To 2 he was daddy. Strong. Wise. Loving. Giving. Building whatever we asked. When Gary became his son-in-law, he knew he now had 3 children! He loved with all he was. Ready with whatever was needed, giving what was wanted. Teaching. Advising. Leading. Always leading.
To 1 he was Hun. He loved his Sylvia more than words can express. He took care of her. He needed her. They were an example of marriage that will have a lasting impact on all who knew them. He loved the Lord and listened to more sermons than I will ever hear in a life time! Had so many preachers in their home to eat, children for get togethers and games, strangers to spend the night. He prayed from his heart and with the love of God in all he did. She loved all he loved. Sylvia and Gene. Gene and Sylvia. They were one.
He passed away last night. With his family near, holding his hands, weeping. That kind of love is a forever love. A love that will continue to grow as we remember his impact our entire lives
