Obituary for Walter Ernest Lucas, Jr.
Walt Lucas, Jr. peacefully passed away Friday August 5, 2022 at his home in Jackson, MS after a long battle with a very debilitating disease. He was surrounded by his family with love during his passing. He was married many years to the love of his life, Lisa Lucas. He was born in Cleveland, MS and was the first-born of four children to Walter and Shirley Lucas. He graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1972. After high school, he attended Delta State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He also earned his master’s degree in Education.
After college, he moved to the gulf coast. Walt absolutely loved being near the water. He worked in the public school system as a speech therapist and audiologist for a number of years before starting a long career in the commercial insurance business, which continued until he retired. He serviced numerous clients all over the state of Mississippi in the school systems, hospitals, and corporate arena.
He loved to tent camp, fish, sail and make music. He was an extremely gifted musician. He played the guitar, piano and trombone by ear and had an incredible voice. He played in bands as early as junior high school and continued to play music his entire life. He played in multiple venues, and played for wedding receptions and private parties all over the mid-south. He wrote and recorded numerous songs, which his family will forever treasure. When Walt was playing music, you could count on him sporting a bright tropical beach shirt and wearing a really big smile.
His happiest of times were when he was making music and spending time with his family. He loved the Lord and his family with all his heart.
He is survived by his wife, Lisa; his son, Justin (Alana); his daughter, Marissa; his grandchildren, Harrison, Meredith and Sawyer; his parents, Walter and Shirley Lucas; his siblings, Jim, Mark and Penne; and his beloved cat, Sadie.
A family memorial service will be held in Gulfport, Mississippi.
