Obituary for W. Dave Owen, D.D.S.
William David Owen passed away peacefully after an extended illness on Saturday, January 27, 2018. He was born on October 8, 1940 to Minnie Gertrude (Polly) Daniel Owen and William Earl Owen in Jackson, MS. He attended Meridian schools where he graduated in 1958. One of his fondest memories was of the Meridian Triangle Restaurant Chic Steaks he was given for making honor roll. He graduated from Mississippi State University and Loyola School of Dentistry followed by residency in Prosthodontics at the VA Hospital in New Orleans and Memphis, TN. He served in the Marine Corp on active duty, then in the Army and Naval Reserves. He taught Prosthodontics at LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans, LA before returning to Jackson, MS to set up his dental practice. Practicing dentistry was far more than a career for Dave. It was a true joy, an avenue for helping people. He was a member of the Mississippi Dental Association and the American Academy of Prosthodontics. He was a member of the Rankin County Rotary Club and was a past District Governor for District 6820. He was a charter member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of trustees, as well as other church duties. A sports enthusiast, he was an avid golfer, and had enjoyed playing on the church softball team. Reading was a life-long pleasure, especially science fiction and westerns. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Delois Armstrong Owen and their son, Gary Owen; sister, Linda Jean Owen Parker (Don), brothers, Rich Owen (Joyce), Randy Owen (Linda Sue), stepmother, Dot McKay Owen, stepbrothers, Roger McKay (Jean) and Joe McKay (Linda Kay). Friends are invited to visitation with the family after 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (Reservoir), 400 Grants Ferry Rd., where the funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m., the Rev. Warren Coile, officiating. Interment will follow in Natchez Trace Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stewpot Ministries, 1100 West Capitol Street, Jackson, MS. 39203 or to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 400 Grants Ferry Rd., Brandon, MS 39047 or to the charity of your choice.
