Obituary for Virginia Scales Lowe
Virginia Scales Lowe, 78, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
A native of Starkville, Mississippi, born April 12, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Hunter Ledbetter Scales and Mary Herron Scales. She received her undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University where she later returned to complete her Masters. Mrs. Lowe was a dedicated school teacher for decades having taught high school students for 18 years at Callaway High School in Jackson, Mississippi and for 31 years in schools in Harlingen, Texas.
She was a strong and independent woman who believed in the equality and rights of all persons. The passion drove her to attend law school and to teach high school students History and Government. She was also an avid reader and at anytime could have been found alternating between multiple books. She will also be remembered for her weekends serving customers in the former Olde Tyme Delicatessen in Jackson.
She is loved and survived by her children: daughter, E. Marie Bryant, of Pearl, MS; son, Charles G. Lowe III and his wife, Beth, of Madison, MS; sisters, Dabney Helms and her husband, Jim, of Petal, MS and Katherine Scales, of McAllen, TX; grandchildren: Jennifer Bryant, Chris Bryant, Mary “Katie” Bryant, Charley Lowe IV, and Mark Lowe; great grandchildren: Dontoria Varnell, Dontae Varnell, and Lucy Bryant.
A memorial service will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, January 18, 2018 at Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland.
