Virginia Harrison Childress, 88, passed away Saturday, November 11, 2017 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, she was born January 14, 1929, the daughter of the late Col. Henry Christopher Harrison, Jr. and Cornelia Green Harrison. Having moved to Jackson in 1939 with her family following her father’s military assignment, she was a 1946 graduate of Central High School. She was married November 15, 1947 to Jack Childress. Following Jack’s retirement in May of 1987, she and her husband traveled the entire U.S. and Canada for many years meeting new friends and enjoying this special time together. She was a lifelong Episcopalian. A member of Grace Episcopal Church in Canton for nearly 60 years, she was active in their church community serving on the Altar Guild and as a state delegate for the National Episcopal Church Women.
Above all, she cherished her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother-in-law and sister, Ralph and Cornelia Boozman.
She is survived by her husband of 70 years, John R. “Jack” Childress, Sr., of Flora; daughter, Connie Caldwell (Steve), of Flora; sons, John R. Childress, Jr. (Pam), of Fleming Island, FL and Henry “Toby” Childress, of Flora; 7 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; and numerous other loving relatives and friends.
