Obituary for Virginia Ellen Powers Salter
Virginia Ellen Powers Salter, 90, known as “Ginny” or “GG” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, died on July 23, 2021. The only child of the late Evelyn Turner Powers and Vernon Isaac Powers, she was born in Oklahoma City, OK, on July 31, 1930. The daughter of a pilot and rancher, her childhood was spent in Chicago, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Kansas City, Dallas, San Benito and Big Wells, TX, and Macon, MS. She finished high school at Our Lady of the Lake boarding school in San Antonio, then attended Southern Methodist University, Ole Miss, and the University of Texas, graduating with a degree in sociology. While her children were young, she was a homemaker, gardener, room mother, realtor, and Avon lady. At the age of 50, she taught herself to type, later learning word processing, and ended her salaried years in the Division Office at Millsaps College. Virginia had a competitive streak and loved to play bridge; many of her bridge partners became close friends. She is survived by her three children, Caryn S. Quilter (Stephen), Evelyn S. Isonhood (Thomas), and John Vernon Salter (Richard Preston); her grandchildren, Sarah Q. Mitchell (Larkin), Benjamin I. Quilter (Linda Klimpel), and Thomas Turner Isonhood; and great-grandchildren Sarah Pace Mitchell, Cary Mitchell, Charles Quilter, and Love Mitchell. Gateway Rescue Mission, Sunnybrook Children’s Home, and Lake Harbour Church of Christ were her charities of choice. A private service was held on July 30; due to the current surge in COVID cases, it was limited to immediate family only.
