Obituary for Vicki Lambert Mixon
Vicki Lambert Mixon, grammarian, expert whistler, card shark, and spaghetti and creamed potatoes master chef, passed away peacefully at her home on March 28.
She was born in McComb, MS, on December 18, 1948, to A.C. (Butch) Lambert, Sr., and Ida Gilliland Lambert. The family soon moved to Fulton and later to Tupelo. Vicki was a member of Tupelo High School’s Class of 1966. After graduating from Itawamba Junior College, the University of Mississippi, and Delta State University, Vicki enjoyed a career as a well-respected educator and trainer. She worked at Jackson Academy, St. Dominic’s Hospital, and Region 8 Mental Health Services.
Lovingly called “Key” by her siblings, she was an avid reader, enduring life in a sports-oriented household. She even survived being tested as a substitute football in a punting machine by her older brother. She got stitches; he got a whipping. Key was the quintessential big sister to her younger brother and sister, taking them and the dog Sneakers to Sherer’s Drive-In on Friday nights, where all the high school kids hung out.
In the summer of her 20th year, her free spirit and a Volkswagen van of hippies headed out (ran off) to Yellowstone National Park to find jobs for the summer. Though she returned home (was dragged back) to continue her education, returning to Yellowstone became a long-standing tradition.
While at Ole Miss, Vicki met her future husband and lifelong boyfriend, Butch Mixon. They married in 1970, enjoying over 51 years of love, companionship, and lively banter.
Vicki’s greatest joy was found in her family, her life with Butch, her children, and her grandchildren. She and Butch loved traveling and visited almost every state in the U.S. Vicki was incredibly proud of the accomplishments of her children, and she beamed with pride over her three grandchildren. While still an avid reader, she finally turned into a sports fanatic as she cheered on her grandsons in baseball, soccer, and track and her Ole Miss Rebels.
Vicki was a faithful Christian and a long-time Meadowbrook Church of Christ member. She loved her church family and cherished those friendships.
With her quick wit and caring heart, Vicki could bring laughter where there was sadness and warmth where there was isolation. While her physical presence is no longer with us, her memory will live on through all who know and love her.
In addition to her parents, Vicki was preceded in death by her nephew, Ted Lambert, and niece Lori Lambert of Jackson, MS.
Vicki is survived by her husband: Butch Mixon, of Jackson, MS; children: Amy Burney (Brian) of Braxton, MS; Mixon Nelson (Marit) of Durham, NC; grandchildren: Gannon Burney and Garrett Burney of Braxton, MS; and Dicey Nelson of Durham, NC; brothers: A.C. (Butch) Lambert, Jr. (Sandra) of Amelia Island, FL; Scott Lambert (Nancy) of Winter Springs, FL; sister Amy Lambert (Sandy) of Jackson, MS; sister-in-law: Patty Temple of Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A celebration of Vicki’s life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunnybrook Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1497, Ridgeland, MS 39158, or a charity of your choice.
