Obituary for Tommy G. Thornton, Sr.
Tommy G. Thornton, Sr. died Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. He was 75 when the Lord called him home.
A native and lifelong resident of Mississippi, he was the son of the late Dexter and Ruby Huff Thornton. Throughout his life he is remembered by family and friends as being very active in their lives and community activities. These included drag racing, horse rodeos, coaching Little League sports, and teaching Karate. He was very successful in all of these endeavors, winning most competitions and many championships. Tommy also loved to take simple stories and turn them into very exaggerated tall tales meant to tease and playfully aggravate family members.
Tommy adored his family and loved spending time with them. His favorite pastimes were playing poker with his brothers and squaring off against them on the golf course. Tommy enjoyed following most sports, but football was by far his favorite. He bled Red and Blue as a diehard Ole Miss fan. He never missed a game, whether it be listening on the radio, watching on TV, or occasionally attending in person. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Edward Thornton and James Elvin Thornton; and a sister, Dorothy Elaine Mills.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nina Marie Thornton; two daughters, Sandra Jean Thornton and Karen Marie Williams (Scott), all of Florence; two sons, Tommy Gene Thornton, Jr. (Constanza), of Alpharetta, GA and Patrick Andrew Thornton (Jessica), of Richland; two sisters, Tressie Lee McGraw, of Brandon, and Tina Alene Brister, of Florence; four brothers: Robert Leon Thornton (Mary), of Brandon; Chester Raymond Thornton (Johnnie), of Florence; Larry Mitchell Thornton, of Richland; and William Dexter Thornton, of Florence; nine grandchildren: Meagan Alexandra Keys, Chelsea Lynn Rushing (Joseph), Zachary Alexander Keys (Laura), David Grayson Williams, Camila Marie Thornton, Tommy Gene Thornton III, Lucia Isabel Thornton, Alyssa Nicole Thornton, and Gabriel Nicholas Thornton; great grandchildren, Aubrey Clyde Phillips III and Ava Katherine Rushing; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland.
Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday until the hour of the service.
