Obituary for Thomas Wendell Prewitt, Jr “Tommy”
Dr. Thomas Wendell Prewitt, Jr “Tommy” of Jackson went to be with his Lord on February 18, 2022 after a long battle with dementia.
He was born in Jackson, MS to Thomas Wendell Prewitt “Tom” and Page Lott Prewitt on February 24, 1961. He met his wife, Cissy Primos Prewitt, in fourth grade at First Presbyterian Church Day School, where they became best friends. They married on July 13, 1989.
As a boy, Tommy spent his summers at Alpine Camp for Boys in Mentone, Alabama. His love for Alpine ran so deep that he spent several summers as a teenager there working in the kitchen. After graduating from high school at Jackson Prep, Tommy attended Ole Miss where he was an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a leader in Pike, but more importantly, he was a favorite brother to all.
Tommy went on to attend medical school and residency at The University of Mississippi Medical Center where he completed his surgery training. He also completed a surgical oncology fellowship at The National Cancer Institute of The National Institute of Health. He practiced for over 20 years in North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Mississippi.
Tommy was known for his wit and sense of humor, entertaining both friends and family. As a father, he instilled in his children a high work ethic and life skills, but most importantly he made sure his children knew the Lord Jesus Christ.
As a doctor, he taught his residents that the welfare of the patients always came first, and the importance of spending time with the family members. His whole medical career, he was known as an advocate for the patient.
After being diagnosed with early onset dementia at the age of 55, Tommy was introduced to the world of art by his wife, Cissy. He started drawing and painting as his way of expressing himself. Through his art, he found a sense of accomplishment and a way to communicate with others in a new dimension.
Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Thomas W. Prewitt, Sr. and his brother-in-law, Tony Mansoor, Jr. He is survived by his wife Cissy Primos Prewitt, his son Dixon Prewitt of Los Angeles, CA, his daughters Gwynn Prewitt of New York, NY and Grace Guerrero (Brooks) of Barcelona, Spain, and his sister Ginny Prewitt Mansoor of Madison, MS.
The family would like to thank Debby Gooch of Beau Ridge Memory Care, caregivers Samson, Xavier, Jayden, and Fred, and the rest of the wonderful staff members for their extraordinary care and compassion of Tommy during his last year.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to The MIND Center of The University of Mississippi Medical Center, The Hard Places Community Mission, or The Little Light House of Central Mississippi. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at Fondren Church with visitation beginning at 10:00 am.
