Obituary for Sylvia Price Hinton
Sylvia Price Hinton, age 81, beloved wife of Roy Harold Hinton, passed away on January 11, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family, following a lengthy illness with Alzheimer’s. Sylvia was born March 2, 1936 in Winston County, Noxapater, Mississippi, to Barney C. Price and Lois C. Price. She attended East Central Community College, graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Music Education and received her master’s degree in Special Education from Mississippi State University. She taught music, elementary education, and Special Education in the Quitman School System for 30 years and had a talent for seeing the good in all her students, leaving them with lasting memories and worthwhile skills. Countless students and co-workers remember her tireless efforts with love and kindness. A member of First Baptist Church, Quitman, she taught Sunday School for more than 20 years and sang in the choir. During that time, she served in many capacities with a servant's heart. She blessed many shut-ins with foods and heart-warming visits. She treasured the friendships she made during her time in Quitman and enjoyed the opportunities to visit with those friends throughout the years. After retiring, she and Harold moved to Brandon, MS to live near their children and grandchildren, where she was a member of First Baptist Church, Jackson, singing in the senior choir, the Reflections. A friend, a Christian, a daughter, a devoted wife, mother, grandparent, "sister," gentle kindness was her legacy with all of these. Better known as Mimi and Mother #2, she devoted her life after retirement to her grandchildren, carpooling them and friends to their activities such as ballet, soccer, and school functions. She rarely missed anything in which they were involved. Many memories were made traveling over 47 continental states with her beloved husband. Her extended family loved gathering around her table, laden with her delicious homemade dishes, bonding family ties. It is not unusual today to receive phone calls asking for her recipes for her fabulous caramel candy which she often sent on band bus trips and other activities of her daughters. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Barney and Lois Price, and brothers, Barney Ray and Ralph Price. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Harold; daughters Karen Chapman, Kathy Ross (Curtis); grandchildren, Christopher Chapman, Kimberly Chapman Edwards (Benjamin) and Sarah Ross, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and sisters-in-law. The family wishes to thank Hospice, Donna Fields, caregiver, along with Robyn Harrelson for the devotion and love demonstrated throughout Sylvia’s illness. Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM in the Chapel at First Baptist Church Jackson, at 431 North State Street on Saturday, January 13, 2018, followed by the funeral at 11:00. Burial will be at Lakeland Place Cemetery on Lakeland Drive across from Pinelake Church. Memorials can be made to Reflections Choir, First Baptist Church, Jackson, P. O. Box 250, Jackson, MS, 39205.
