Obituary for Susan Cunningham Benham
Susan Cunningham Benham
Susan Cunnningham Benham lost her battle to metastatic breast cancer on Friday, October 26, 2018. She was surrounded by her family as she ended her heroic battle.
Susan was born on September 9, 1950, in Sherman, Texas. At the age of two, she moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where she spent the rest of her childhood. In 1968, Susan graduated from C.E. Byrd High school and from Louisiana State University in 1972. While at LSU, Susan was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She was also a member of the Demoiselle Club and the Junior League of Shreveport.
Susan married John Robert Benham, Jr. in 1992. She and John moved to Madison, MS in 1997.
She was a banker for 20 years and worked in the accounting field for Roberts, Cherry and Company and then for Benham Cherry.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband John Robert Benham, Jr., who died two months ago on August 8, 2018, her parents Marion and Claude Cunningham, and grandparents Virginia and Ed Crawford and Emily and Estill Cunningham.
Susan is survived by her two sisters, Marion Cunningham Schneider (Randy) and Julia Cunningham Walton; two nieces Virginia P. Kavanaugh (Rich) and Caroline K. Christiansen (Paul); nephew Merrick C. Walton (Chrissy); five great nephews Caelan and Porter Leslie, Crawford Christiansen and Trey and Jack Walton; cousins Katie Weir (Don), Edward Crawford (Laura) and John Crawford (Diane), step-son Jefferson A. Benham (Pam) and step-grandchildren Drew and Ashlyn.
Susan was an active member of Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church in Madison, MS where she served on the Altar Guild and the Knitting Guild. Because of her love of gardening, she “adopted” several gardens at the church which provided beautiful flowers year-round.
Susan was known for her gentle nature, her love of cooking, fine dining, gardening and her knitting prowess. She was an avid LSU fan and bled purple and gold. She was generous to a fault, and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
A memorial service will be held for Susan and John Benham on Saturday, November 10th at 11A.M. at St. Mark's Cathedral in Shreveport, LA. Sebrell Funeral Home, Ridgeland, MS handling arrangements.
The family would like to thank the wonderful, tireless and loving caregivers, Reynelle Cornelius, Jean Luckett and Jacqueline Coats.
