Obituary for Sudie McCool Manning
Sudie Anne McCool Manning, 92, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, July 19, 2021. Sudie was born July 16, 1929 to Emmett Edward and Catherine Campbell McCool in the Davis-Campbell family farmhouse south of Kosciusko. The McCools lived in several Delta towns and then settled in Jackson where Sudie attended Whitfield Elementary, Enochs Junior High and Central High where she met James Oliver “Jimmie” Manning. She attended Mississippi University for Women and then graduated from Ole Miss in Elementary Education where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. Shortly after finishing at Ole Miss, she married Jimmie Manning. A few years later they moved to New Orleans while Jimmie was pursuing his medical education at Tulane University and then to Shreveport while he was completing his residency. The Mannings then moved back to Jackson where they remained while raising their four children.

Sudie was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a talented artist in both watercolor and oil. Her work was exhibited in juried shows in Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, the Mississippi Museum of Art, the World’s Fair in New Orleans, the National Arts Club and the Salmagundi Club, both in New York, New York. She was honored by being a featured artist in Art for Heart, and she was the Children’s Hospital Artist for 1999. Her work is in the MS Museum of Art permanent collection. She was a member of the Jackson Watercolor Society, The Gaddis Group, Art Study Club, the Gallery Guild, and Southern Luncheon Club, The Supper Club and served as president of the LeFleur Garden Club. She also enjoyed playing bridge with friends for many years. Highlands, NC became their summer home for many years. Football weekends in Oxford and yearly trips to Maine with close friends were cherished memories.

Sudie was preceded in death by her husband Dr. James Oliver Manning, Jr., her parents, Catherine and Emmett Edward McCool and her brothers Dr. Campbell McCool, and Dr. Edward McCool. Sudie is survived by her children James Oliver Manning III, Dr. Edward Manning (Toni), Anne Manning Cunningham (Bob), and Michael Manning (Lelia); grandchildren Amanda Manning Markow (Majure), Dr. Jim Cunningham (Carrie), Dr. Kate Cunningham Cranford (Alden), Walker Manning (Anne Elise), Emmett Manning (Kesler), Betsy Cunningham, and Marion Manning (fiancé Ashton); and great grandchildren Manning Markow, Liam Cranford, Sudie Markow, Campbell Cranford; nieces and nephews Campbell McCool, Edward McCool, Catherine McCool Dean, Liz McCool Carter, Sudie McCool Moyse; and lifelong cherished friends.

There will be a graveside service on Friday, July 23 at 9:00 am at Parkway Memorial Cemetery on Highland Colony Parkway. Visitation to follow at First Presbyterian Church of Jackson 10:30 am – 11:45 am. Memorial service in the Sanctuary at noon.
