Obituary for Sonja Walker Barnes
Sonja Walker Barnes, 54, was welcomed to Heaven on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at University of Mississippi Medical Center. A visitation will be at 12:00 on Saturday, June 3, 2017 with the service at 2:00 at Bellwether Church in Jackson followed by graveside service at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland. Sonja was born on September 13, 1962 in Jackson, MS, to Joseph and Linda Walker. She attended Forest Hill High School and graduated from McCluer Academy. Sonja continued her education earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Mississippi and worked for many years as a registered nurse. While attending the University of Southern Mississippi she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority where she developed lifelong friendships. Sonja was a talented artist and through this talent she spent many years designing and painting interiors. She was active in the Jackson community, volunteering with the Mississippi Children's Home. As an active member of Bellwether Church, Sonja participated in the Honduras Missions. She also enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Country Club of Jackson Garden Club. Sonja loved to share the gospel every opportunity she had with friends and with strangers. Her motto was “This world is not my home. I’m trying to take as many people to heaven with me as I can.” She cherished being a mother and above all loved her family and her dog Bella. Survivors include her husband, Marty Barnes of Jackson; daughter, Kirsti Jackson Bryant (Cody) of Yazoo City, MS; son, Walker Christian Barnes of Jackson; father, Joseph Walker of Brandon; mother, Linda Russell Walker of Brandon; sister, Wendi McWhorter (Johnny) of Pensacola, FL; brother, Jason Walker (Tara) of Birmingham, AL; mother-in-law, Pat Barnes of Burnsville,MS; brother-in-law, Harold Barnes of Burnsville, MS; nieces and nephews including, Finley Grace Walker, Payton Lynn Walker, Joseph Jason Walker, Jr., Randy Barnes and Kim Pittman. Serving as pallbearers are Walker Barnes, Jason Walker, Cody Bryant, Johnny McWhorter, Jim Varner, Danny Williams and Randy Barnes. Memorials may be made to the Bellwether RAISE more fund.
