Obituary for Sly Sherman Fields
Sylvester Sherman Fields, 70, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, June 27, 2017 at his home in Clinton, Mississippi. During his life he was the man who always wore a smile. Known to his friends of his native Oklahoma, he was called “Syl.” If people knew him from Jackson, Clinton and other surrounding areas of the capital city he was known as, “Sly.” Sly never met a stranger and he possessed a great sense of humor, always the man who provided unending entertainment to his friends and family. He loved, cherished and adored his family, especially his children, grandchildren and one great-grandchild. It was often noted that he would travel great distances to be there to celebrate a milestone for his children and grandchildren upon achieving their goals. It gave him great pleasure to show them affection and to be the type of father everyone could look up to. He was the person you went to when times were tough and you needed a gentle hand and the positive reinforcement to get you through any situation. In fact, he had neighbors who respected him and looked out and watched around the house for him. They kept a check on him because they were more than mere houses that surrounded his, they were his true friends. Mr. Fields was a natural born leader which showed over the years in his daily work as a representative of United Food Workers International Union. After his retirement, he volunteered for a few days per week. His colleagues shared a greater connection to him due to the type of banter he exhibited, the folks he worked around continued to be grateful for a man of his caliber. The men he worked with became his family and they shared a special kinship to each other. He enjoyed being the positive voice and the motivator to all who knew him. A people person by nature, he enjoyed several hobbies, flower gardening, fishing and hunting in his younger days. He was the guy who was always willing to help others out and to lend a helping and generous hand to those in need. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alex Fields and Thelma Marie Greer Fields; and a sister, Abie Mallory. He is survived by his son, Lamar Fields and wife, Germaine of Northwest Oklahoma City, OK; daughters, Patricia Fields-Billings and husband, Eric of Oklahoma City, OK and Katrice Powell of Norman, OK; brothers, Alex Eugene Fields and wife, Patsy of Noble, OK and Timmie Fields of Midwest City, OK; sisters, Ella Rose Mitchell of Oklahoma City, OK and Agnes Brown of Marietta, GA; 6 grandchildren, Jerisha, Donovan, Brendan, Mara, Jordan and DaeJa, 1 great-grandchild, Brendan Fields, Jr.; many nieces, nephews and a host of extended family and friends to cherish his memory.
