Obituary for Sharon "Cookie" Barland Clardy Bufkin
Cookie was born on November 10th, 1942 to Ed and Flo Barland and grew up in Port Gibson, MS. Her grandmother nicknamed her “Cookie” at a young age after a comic strip character. Some of her favorite pastimes growing up included driving the farm truck out in the pasture with her dad and living in the same town as Chamberlain Hunt, a military boys school in Port Gibson! She and her friends had fun pulling pranks, such as blowing “Reveille” in the middle of the night and watching the boys file out of the dorm. Of course, they got caught! Cookie attended Ole Miss where she pledged Phi Mu Sorority. After one semester there, she married Howard “Sonny” Clardy and together they had 3 children: Kim Erickson (Kirk) of Madison, MS, Pam Jordan (Rob) of Cocoa Beach, FL and Rob Clardy (Klaye) of Jackson, MS. Later in life, she married Robert “Bob” Bufkin, also from Port Gibson. Bob was a groomsman in her wedding to Sonny. He was a faithful husband and caregiver to Cookie. He passed away unexpectedly in April of 2016, so Cookie moved to St. Catherine’s where she received great care. She was blessed to have 3 great private caregivers: Pat Thomas, Claudis Walker and Geraldine Garrett. She had five grandchildren, Joseph and Katie Erickson, Jake Allen, and Katherine and Caroline Clardy. One of the grandkid’s favorite memories is persuading “Memaw” to sit in the front of the log ride at Disney where of course, she got drenched! The grandkids also loved Memaw’s stories because she always started out by saying “I never will forget the time……”. After Port Gibson, she and her family lived in Yazoo City, Carthage, Jackson and then Madison. She was a tennis player and slalom water skier. She loved to play bridge and visit with dear friends, especially her cousins, Michele Hudson, Sells and Kent Newman, Charlie McGuffee, Harold Johnson and Morris Currie. So whether her name was Cookie, Mom or Memaw, she was loved dearly by many. If you wish to make a gift in Cookie’s memory, the family suggests, Young Life of Madison County, P.O.
