Obituary for Shane Garrard
Shane would like to let you know that his work here is done. He received a call, a sort of “an offer you can’t refuse”, for an appointment from which he will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus: a reunion with family and friends he has not seen in a long time. His new mission takes him to a wonderful place where he will be fishing, hunting, and laughing to his heart’s content. Laughter and love will be guaranteed. Food is delicious and you never gain a pound. He left detailed instructions for his precious wife and children to celebrate his mission here in Mississippi, which has now been completed.
Shane’s friends and family want to let him know – Bravo on a life well lived!
If you measure one’s life by the children they raise – Shane Garrard wins in spades. He and Nicole raised 4 incredible children – Chad, Emily, Kellam, and Beverly - and loved them immensely.
If you measure one’s life by the person they love – Nicole will tell you, their love story will last for ages.
If you measure one’s life by their accomplishments – Shane’s resume will give anyone a run for their money.
But… if you measure one’s life by the number of lives they impacted – well, then we must all stand in awe of what Shane Garrard has done. His impact on people is immeasurable. He lived a life full of service and the ripple effects of his work will be felt for generations to come. When you think of all the families, the babies and mothers, the children, and fathers and husbands and brothers he has helped find restoration…. It’s awe-inspiring.
Shane found his love for working with those suffering for substance use disorder when he worked as a night aide at Fairland Treatment Center. He returned to school, obtained a LCSW degree and climbed his way up the ladder as a counselor, then director of that treatment center, and ultimately Director of the Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Services for the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.
We will remember Shane’s smile, his warmth, his energy, his love for life, family and friends, colleagues, and clients, many of whom over time also became family. He worked very hard all his life, up until the very end. He made a difference in the lives of many. We invite you to join us and celebrate together.
