Obituary for Sergio W. Fernandez
How do you explain who a person was? How can you sum up the life of someone so incredibly human, yet so beyond this world as Sergio W. Fernandez? You know him as Sergio, Serge, Big Serge, the man with the velvet voice. A legend in his own time in the Jackson music and media communities.
Like a seasoned session player, you heard him a thousand times without knowing it. Tunes Til Two, These Days, Captain Mothballs, Bumpers Biggie Bag jingle, countless voiceovers, and family videos with low-budget special effects. He never stopped sharing his immense talent with his little slice of this world.
But he was more. His superpower was the ability to make every person he encountered feel like they were special, and in moments with him, you were the only person in the world. He had a knack for jokes, dad jokes, and the lowest of low-brow jokes. And he had whatever you needed. Whether it was as simple as making you laugh, or as considerate as sending you a video he made from his heart, just to let you know he was thinking of you.
He was the epitome of a friend. He listened; he cared; he opened his home and his heart to all, especially his “yard youngins,” who all considered him a dad. Needless to say, Sergio will be deeply missed by those who knew him and those who merely knew the impeccable results of his craft.
Sergio was preceded in death by his parents, Sergio and Marietta Fernandez, and more recently by the love of his life, Ginnie “Pig” Fernandez. He is survived by his children, Solana Rene Fernandez, Sergio Roland Fernandez, Mary Carolyn Webb, Jessie Case, and Casey Bennett, and by his grandchildren, Isabel Solana Fernandez, Miley and Wilson Webb, and Ginnie Le Case, and sisters Sharron Bone and Marci Siegel. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Methodist Rehab or a charity of your choosing. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 28, 2021 at Hal & Mal's in Jackson, 2-5pm.
