Obituary for Scott Parker Hemleben
Scott Hemleben, 74, passed away on September 21, 2018 in Jackson. Born in Floral Park, NY, Scott was raised in Lafayette, LA and had been a resident of Jackson since 1967. Scott received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Mississippi in 1964, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1967, where he graduated with distinction. Following law school, Scott served as a law clerk to the Chief Justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court. Scott also served in the United States Army Reserve Judge Advocate General Corps where he was Commanding Officer of the 164th JAG Detachment. For the majority of his career, Scott was a partner in the law firm of Gerald, Brand, Watters, Cox & Hemleben, where his primary areas of practice included Oil and Natural Gas litigation and Environmental Law. Throughout his career, Scott served on numerous boards and professional organizations, including: president of the Hinds County (now Capital Area) Bar Association; president of the Mississippi Oil & Gas Lawyers Association; chairman of the Natural Resources Energy & Environmental Law Section of the Mississippi Bar; chairman of the Mississippi Bar Leadership Conference; among others. He was a Mississippi Bar Foundation Fellow and was listed in the “Best Lawyers in America” and “Who’s Who in American Law.” Scott was an advocate and supporter of Catholic education and enjoyed fishing and Ole Miss Athletics. Scott is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Sylvester John Hemleben of Cocoa Beach, FL and Mary Hemleben of Lafayette, LA. Scott is survived by his wife of 45 years, Suzanne (nee Whatley); daughter, Sarah Perkins (Jeff); sons, Mark (Ashley), John (Mary Clare), and Joe (Emiko); brother, S.J. Hemleben (Debby) of Lafayette, LA; and four grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 28th at St. Richard of Chichester Catholic Church, Jackson. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Scott’s name to St. Richard’s Special Kids Program or the Mississippi Bar’s Lawyers & Judges Assistance Program.
