Obituary for Sarastelle Jones Sigrest

Sarastelle Jones Sigrest passed to glory on Wednesday, September 28, 2022. Sarastelle was born January 21, 1929 to parents Chester Edwin Jones and Sara Mae Mosley Jones in Greenville, MS and then moved to Jackson, MS at the age of three.

She grew up in the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. At an early age it was apparent that Sarastelle was a stunningly gifted vocal talent and she began singing in the choir at the age of 8. She graduated from Belhaven College in 1951 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance, then married Marion Lane Sigrest in May of 1951. Musical highlights included singing as the special guest performer on the top of the Belhaven Singing Christmas Tree in 1960. In 1962 she performed with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra as guest soprano soloist in the performance of “Carmina Burana”. A music critic heralded her as “The little bitty girl with a great big voice.”

After living for four years in Oklahoma City, husband Marion enrolled in the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and Saratelle worked for Michael Baker Engineering as one of the first female mapping draftsmen in Mississippi. She never lost her uncanny sense of direction after that. Marion and Sarastelle settled in Yazoo City with their four children, Marian, Cynthia, Sammy, and Elizabeth, in 1963 as Marion began his medical practice.

Sarastelle was a Life Member of the Junior Auxiliary of Yazoo City, on the Yazoo Arts Council, a 54 year member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was the Yazoo Chapter Rosalie Rose. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Yazoo City and served as choir director for many years and then was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson and choir for most of the remaining years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dr. Marion Lane Sigrest, and brother, Chester Gray Jones. She is survived by her children, Marian Hill (Julian) of Tupelo, Cynthia McGraw (William) of Hattiesburg, Sam Sigrest (Jan) and Elizabeth Remington (Hank), both of Yazoo City. Grandchildren: Bryant Hill, Sara Alice Flynn (Chris), Olivia Hill, Cydney Fleming (David), Tyler McGraw, Eric Remington (Emily), Patrick Remington (Jennifer), Jeffrey Remington (Kimberly), and Catherine Hart (Chaston), along with 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday, September 30, 2022 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church in Yazoo City. The funeral will be Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022 at 11:00 A.M., also at FPC Yazoo City. Burial will follow at Flora Cemetery, Flora, MS.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to French Camp Academy or Palmer Home for Children.

Sarastellle loved her church and choir. She loved her DAR. She loved British history and everything surrounding The Crown. Her granddaughter Catherine said it best. “I like to think that grandmother didn’t want to live in a world without Queen Elizabeth, but she waited long enough to not overshadow her. Very classy move. Very grandmother.”

But that voice. Even in her last days she could be found conducting to herself and singing. When Christ returns, she’ll have her perfect body, but the voice will probably be the same. She sings now.
