Obituary for Sarah Jocelyn Steel
Sarah Jocelyn Steel, age 97, of St. Augustine, passed away on January 23, 2020 at Flagler Hospital with her family by her side. Sarah was born in Richmond, Virginia and grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Greensboro High School, attended Salem College in Winston Salem, NC, and graduated from Women’s College in Greensboro with a degree in Education. She married Dale C. Steel on June 7, 1949. They started their married life in Pittsburgh, Pa. and lived in many places following Dale’s career as a Professional Civil Engineer. She had been a resident of St. Augustine since 2011. She was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church in Concord, Ca. and was a current member of McDowell Baptist Church in St. Augustine. She enjoyed attending church and bible study and was an avid reader and loved to sing. She was loved by her family and friends and she will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents, Joseph H. Mason and Marion White Mason, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Crytzer Steel, and brothers, Robert Mason and Joseph Mason, Jr. She is survived by a daughter, Marion Whitehead (Carson) of St. Augustine; a son, Dale William Steel (Darlene) of Ridgeland, MS.; a brother, Dr. Marion W. Mason (Peggy) of Winston Salem, NC; a nephew, Robert Mason; grandchildren, Jessica Whitehead, Julie Ann Whitehead (Drew Headley), Dale Mason Steel, Sarah Steel Lucas (Brent Lucas); and great grandchildren, Samuel Lucas and Hannah Lucas.
Services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, Jan 29, 2020 at McDowell Baptist Church in St. Augustine, Florida with Pastor Steve Brown officiating. A visitation beginning at 10:30 am will precede the service at the church.
A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Jessamine Cemetery in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
