Obituary for Sara Crawford
Some people are blessed with a good life. Sara Crawford was blessed with a great life. Much of this was due to the stellar attitude she had towards life, but more specifically, was due to her profound faith and belief in God. Though later in life she had vision in only one eye, she saw more clearly than most because she viewed the world through the lenses of her LORD and the consistent study of His Word. Not only did she see the glass half full, but it was brimming over with sweet tea, something she thoroughly enjoyed!

What makes a great life? Sara heard your words, but she also heard your heart. You might say she was wise beyond her years, but she did have 96 of them, so certainly she acquired some wisdom from the time she spent on this earth. But, it did seem she was born with an extra dose of common sense, which we know is not common at all.

Sara was born March 1, 1925 in Charleston, Mississippi to Samuel Jones and Sadie Burnett Jones. She was the youngest of six children. Following graduation from high school, she moved to Jackson, where she attended Draughn's Business School and studied bookkeeping.

During this time, she began attending First Baptist Church, Jackson. It was in walking distance from the boarding house where she lived. It was here where she met her future husband, James Crawford. They married March 5, 1948. Her career was saturated with Baptists: The Baptist Bookstore, Baptist churches and finally, the Baptist Foundation of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board, where she served as a bookkeeper/accountant and administrative assistant, and from which she retired. (She also held several non-Baptist jobs.)

James and Sara's beloved daughter, Mildred, was born in 1949. She was the light of their lives and the harbinger of great joy. Her death in 2002 was one of the darkest of times in their lives. But, their faith in God was more real than their sorrow.

The Crawfords moved to south Jackson during their early married life and joined Alta Woods Baptist Church, serving faithfully there for many years. In later years, they transferred their membership to First Baptist Church, Jackson.

Wherever Sara lived, she was a shining example of Christ. She was a dedicated employee, a much-loved and respected Sunday School teacher, a devoted wife, a marvelous mother and an incredible friend. She continued demonstrating her love for others when she moved to The Orchard several years ago. She was particularly concerned for the residents and staff whom she felt might not have a personal relationship with Jesus. She prayed regularly for their salvation and offered gentle encouragement to them to consider a relationship with the Lord.

Preceding her in death are her husband, James, her daughter, Mildred, her 5 siblings: Mildred Barnes, Eugene “Bud” Jones, Imogene Morgan, Lorena Ainsworth, Patsy Hayes and her nephew, Charlie Ainsworth.

Those who will miss her most are nephews Sam Ainsworth (Sandra) from Marietta, GA, Tommy Hayes (Barbara) from Huntsville, AL, niece, Etta Bates from Baltimore, MD, as well as nieces and a nephew, numerous great nieces and nephews from both sides of the family and a host of precious friends. Two special relatives from her husband's side of the family are her niece, Elizabeth Stuckey and her great niece, Sheree Tynes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Baptist Foundation (Memorial for Mildred Crawford, which goes to Missions) of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board, P.O. Box 530, Jackson, MS 39205; First Baptist Church, (Annie Armstrong, Lottie Moon, or the Reflections Choir) 431 North State Street, Jackson, MS 39201; Gateway Rescue Mission or the charity of your choice.
