Obituary for Samuel Everett Dixon, III
Samuel Everett Dixon III, beloved son, brother, nephew, and friend died on January 2, 2022. He was the son of Marjorie Buie Underwood and Samuel Everett Dixon, Jr. Sam had a wonderful childhood growing up in a small community near Vaughan, MS. He loved being surrounded by a menagerie of cats, dogs, sheep, chickens, geese, cows and horses. He also eagerly visited the book mobile, which would come to his front door on a regular basis. Thus began his life-long love of literature.

Sam graduated from Jackson Prep in 1987 and attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. where he studied English. After college, Sam worked for a law firm for several years which made him realize he did not want to go to law school. He moved on to work at Frost and Sullivan, a marketing firm in California and then later for Jane Shelton, Inc, a Mississippi interior and fabric design firm with worldwide sales. When he first began, he challenged himself to learn the names of all 500-plus fabrics within two weeks. And he did it, of course. For the past four years, he worked in marketing and public relations for the Mississippi Department of Insurance under Commissioner Mike Chaney.

Ever guided by his passion for reading, conversations with Sam were never dull. As a close friend of his noted, Sam adored stories and storytelling in every form, from classic novels to comic books, from movies to theatre. He remembered absolutely everything about every book he ever read, and he enjoyed discussing and reliving his favorite stories with those he loved. His enthusiasm was infectious, as was his laughter. Sam’s laughs were full and buoyant, leaving anyone who heard them feeling a bit cheerier.

Sam was also a lover of gardening, music, cooking and art, and he had an insatiable desire to educate himself on all the things he loved. Over the course of a Sunday lunch, he could offer concern about a looming scarcity of saffron due to the year’s poor harvest of crocus flowers in Iran, or explain what a difference the country of origin made in the character of paprika. That would no doubt come to mind when you ate one of his deviled eggs which, like everything else he cooked, tasted like magic. Later, you might catch him outside diligently tending to the flower beds. If you were lucky, he might straighten up just long enough to share a flower-growing secret that you’d wish you’d written down when, the next spring, his blooms came back.

Sam was sweet, kind, loving, brilliant, and incredibly thoughtful. As a result, he was The World’s Best Gift Giver. The books he selected for his nieces, nephews, cousins and friends were always right on, carefully chosen and personally tailored to ensure his love of literature would be shared and live on.

In short, Sam had an answer - and usually a credible one - for every question except “How are you doing?” He was a beautiful enigma. He chose what he shared and we savored what we knew.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Webster Millsaps Buie, Jr. and Oralee Graves Buie, and Samuel Everett Dixon and Louise Berry Dixon, and his uncle Webster Millsaps Buie, III.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brothers, Webster Buie Dixon, Joseph Charles Dixon (Laura), his aunts, Priscilla Buie Glass (Jack) and Lise Buie, niece Rayna Davis Dixon, nephew Charles Garrett Dixon, cousins, John Foster Begg, Crosby Glass Pope (Brad) and Mindy Glass Elrod (Charles), and cousins’ children, Kate, Crawford and Lanier Pope, and Jack and Ellison Elrod.
The memorial service is Friday, January 7, 2022 at Galloway United Methodist Church at 11 AM. Visitation begins at 9:30 AM until 11 AM.
