Obituary for Roy Elmore Povall
Roy Elmore Povall, age 83, of Madison, Mississippi, died on April 8, 2021, at Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland.
Roy was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on October 6, 1937. He graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and went on to receive a Master of Social Work from Louisiana State University. He was a commissioned officer in the United States Navy where he served as a cryptographer from 1961-1966.
He began his career in social work with the Mississippi State Department of Health. Over the course of his career, Roy worked for the Jackson Mental Health Center, and served as Hinds County Director for the Mississippi State Department of Public Welfare, Executive Director of the Family Service Association of Greater Jackson, Director of the Family Service Program for the Mississippi Children’s Home Society, and Equal Opportunity Specialist for the U.S. Department of Labor. Roy retired from the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Roy was an active member of Galloway United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served in various leadership positions and as a Stephen Minister for over 20 years. He began painting while in the Navy and was a gifted artist. After retirement, Roy resumed painting and started watercolor classes. Several of his watercolors were featured in an art class show in the Municipal Art Gallery in downtown Jackson. He also enjoyed gardening, growing daylilies and daffodils.
Following retirement, Roy volunteered for Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland where he was able to use his social work and Stephen Ministry skills to care for patients and their families during end of life transition.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents Ruth Elmore Povall and George Oltenburg Povall. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jacqueline Adair Povall of Madison; daughter Julie Povall Collins and her husband, Sid, of Hattiesburg, daughter Emily Povall Massey and her husband, Todd, of Dallas, Texas; sister, Gretchen Povall Passons and her husband, Peyton, of Starkville; grandchildren, Sarah Kate Massey, Caroline Adair Massey, Jack Povall Massey, Emily Brister Collins, and Keith Jamison Collins; cousins, nieces, and a nephew.
There will be a private family funeral on April 13 at 2 p.m. at Galloway United Methodist Church with Rev. Cary Stockett officiating. Live stream will be available. An open visitation will be on April 13 at Sebrell Funeral Home from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland or Stephen Ministry at Galloway United Methodist Church.
