Obituary for Rolland H. Shaw
Rolland H. Shaw was born on June 15, 1938, in Eupora, Mississippi, to Rolland and Sarah Neal Shaw. He died on October 5, 2019. Rolland grew up in Greenville, MS where he graduated High School in 1956. He attended Mississippi College in Clinton, MS receiving a Bachelors Degree in Music Education in 1960. His subsequent Masters and Doctoral degrees in Choral Music were received from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1963 and 1975. He leaves his wife of 61 years, Beverly Ponder Shaw, his three children, David N. Shaw (Kim) of Murfreesboro, N.C., Dr. John R. Shaw (Cheryl) of Lewis Center, OH, and Anne Sligar (Michael) of McKinney, TX, five grandchildren, David , Erin , Chris, and Stephen Shaw, and Matthew Sligar, and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents. His love and support of his wife and children was a primary factor in his life; he valued family connections and was especially passionate to see his children and grandchildren grow and thrive. He enjoyed his chosen profession as a Choral Conductor and Teacher of Singing for forty-six years. He especially enjoyed observing vocal students grow and mature and he found great satisfaction in teaching choral music, leading his choral groups ever toward an aesthetic as well as spiritual experience through singing. His teaching posts included Northwest Mississippi Junior (Community) College, Mississippi College, Arkansas Tech University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and Hinds Community College. He was an active participant in several professional music organizations, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the American Choral Directors Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He was an active Sinfonian for over 60 years and was pleased to serve as Province Governor in two different states, served a term on the National Executive Committee, and served as Chair of the Centennial Songbook Committee. Choral groups under his direction sang for American Choral Directors Association venues in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi. He had the opportunity to lead adult choral groups in various churches as well as community groups. He was Chorus Master for the Mississippi Opera Chorus for more than a decade.
