Robert Holcomb Bass, 71, died September 28, 2022, with his wife and daughter by his side, at his home in Jackson, MS, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Robert was born January 28, 1951, in Jackson, to Betty Jo Holcomb Bass and Dr. Ross Frederick Bass. He spent a lively childhood with many lifelong friends, graduating from Murrah High School in 1969, where he was named Most Talented in Writing. He served on the staff of both his high school and college literary journals. After graduating from Millsaps College in 1973, Robert received his Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi. As an attorney he specialized in litigation, practicing throughout Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.
A natural creative, Robert was a poet, craftsman, and also took to painting and art later in life. As an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, he completed the Education for Ministry (EfM) program and served as a lector. He thrived in the outdoors, loving to run, sail, camp, ski, and cycle. Robert was known for his intellect as well as his kindness. He approached life with curiosity and was keen on adventure. He was a loving husband, devoted father, wonderful brother, and true friend. His gentle heart, spiritual guidance, sense of humor, and deep conversations will be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene “Arty” Tennyson Bass, of Jackson, his daughter, Mallory K. Bass, of Los Angeles, his son Ross C. Bass, of Jackson, and four stepchildren, Tiffany Fennell, Jessica Utley (Brian), Heather Courtney (Paul), and Casey Orr (Linley). He is also survived by his siblings, Ross F. “Rick” Bass, Jr., of Jackson, Elizabeth Bass Raulston (Keith), of Townsend, TN, ten grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at St. James Episcopal Church, in Jackson, preceded by visitation beginning at 1:30 pm in Fowler Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the EfM Program in memory of Robert Holcomb Bass, St. James Episcopal Church, 3921 Oak Ridge Drive, Jackson, MS 39216.
