Obituary for Robert Carroll Smith
On the evening of February 22, 2017, Robert Carroll Smith departed this world to join his Lord and Savior. He was proceeded in death by his Mother and Father, Lorene Carroll Smith and Elmer Loy Smith. He is survived by his wife, Mary Tina (Seavers) Smith and four children; Robert C (& Lisa) Smith, Jr. {Brandon, MS}; Laura ( & Raymond) Penton {Milton, FL}; Adam Bradley ( & Heather) Smith {Ozark, MO}; Sharon C ( & Adam) Coker {Brandon, MS}; 7 Grandchildren, 7 Great-Grandchildren; his Aunt June (Carroll) Waldrip and her son David Waldrip; and Robert's beloved dog Millie. Bob married his first wife, Frieda Elizabeth Caldwell in 1955; she gave him two children, Robert and Laura. He married his surviving wife, Mary Tina (Seavers) Smith in 1976; she gave him two children; Adam and Sharon. Robert was born in Greenville, MS on February 14, 1935, and moved to Jackson in 1939. He graduated from Central High School of Jackson, MS; followed by earning a BS in Mathematics from Millsaps College. During his tenure, he was an avid member of the Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity. Bearing a highly technical mind, he designed over 100 houses before entering the burgeoning field of Information Technology in 1963 where he supported Mainframes and Electronic Data Systems for multiple institutions including several local banks and ultimately retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield as their Security Manager of Systems Information. His immense love of music, began in high school where he was actively involved in the Varsity band, which led him to be elected to serve as the Band Captain his Senior Year at Central HS. He developed a secondary career as a Jazz musician playing in The Over-the-Hill Jazz band performing from New Orleans to Connecticut. Robert played clarinet, saxophone, and some piano. Throughout his life; he enjoyed many hobbies, becoming a self-taught craftsman in a few trades. These hobbies included enjoying the outdoors through fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, coaching youth sports, and especially woodworking. Visitation will be held at Sebrell Funeral Home located at 425 Northpark Dr, Ridgeland, MS 39157 on Saturday, February 25, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon. Visitation will resume at 1:00 p.m. at Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Funeral to be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2017. Robert will then be interred at Lakeland Place Garden Park Cemetery at 6004 Hwy 25, Flowood, MS 39232. The family would like to thank the Staff of Halcyon Hospice Care, LF Sams, MD, Angela Chandler, MD, Staff and Caregivers at Baptist Hospital; and a special thanks to Kevin Tucker, RN and April Bridges, RN. The family would like to extend an unspeakable love to our special angel Yvonne Allen for loving Mr. Smith like he was her own.
