Obituary for Rick Ericksen
Rick L. Ericksen,72, of Ridgeland, MS, formerly of Antioch, IL, passed away, Tuesday, December 22nd in Ridgeland, MS. He was born September 30th, 1948 in Waukegan, IL the son of Warren P. and Phyllis L. (Hughes) Ericksen.
He is survived by his son, Brian C. Ericksen (Virginia) of Park City, IL, daughter, Elizabeth A. Leonowitz (Tom Legg) of Ridgeland, MS formerly of Kenosha, WI; sister, Wendy (Ron) Tumminello of Lindenhurst, IL and his grandchildren Madeleine K. Leonowitz and Lucas S. Ericksen.
Rick had many professional affiliations, credentials, titles, and accomplishments. What these do not tell you about Rick is that he was a dad and a best friend to his son; that he made his children proud by all he had overcome and accomplished. Rick was an amazing man, a strong man, a smart man, and a loving father.
He graduated from North Illinois University earning his bachelor’s degree in Geology and a master’s degree in Geology (Geochemistry/Geochronology). Rick was granted numerous awards and honors while attending Northern Illinois University. He was a Geology Club member, Dean's List - five (5) semesters. Dean's Award College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and was honored with the Outstanding Senior Award from the Department of Geology. Rick was also an undergraduate teaching assistant and National Science Foundation Research Fellow,.
His professional affiliations were numerous, including the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, serving as a member of the Division of Professional Affairs, Vice President and President of the committee. He also served on the Division of Enviromental Geosciences, House of Delegates, Rules and Procedures Committee on Ethics.
As a member of the Mississippi Geological Society Rick held numerous offices ranging from Secretary to First Vice President and President. He served a term as President of the Boland Scholarship Fund, chaired the Legislative/Governmental Affairs Committee and was a member and advisor on several additional Society groups. Rick was a member of the Mississippi State Board of Registered Professional Geologist serving as Board President and acting Executive Director (1997-2000). He was a member of the Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Finance Committee for several years, serving on numerous other committees. Rick was President of the ASBOG Foundation from 2012 until present.
Rick held Registered Professional Geologist Licenses in the State of Mississippi and Texas, also being a Certified Petroleum Geologist by AAPG.
Rick served his community as a City of Ridgeland Zoning Board Member (1988-1997) and was Vice President of the Gateway North Homeowners Association (1979-1981)
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Paul and Glen Ericksen.
