Obituary for Richard E. Read

Richard Eugene Read, 75, died on October 7, 2022 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church.


Richard was born on February 22, 1947, in Oceanside, California, to the late Howard and Elva Read Feckley. He attended Oregon State University and later the University of Southern California; he elected to join the US Navy in 1966. Richard served his Country as a combat photographer and sound recording engineer in Vietnam. While serving in Vietnam, he photographed the famous Green Beret mission, Operation Dumbo Drop. During his Naval career, serving as a photographer, he met President Nixon and numerous other celebrities. Richard served in Korea, Africa, the Mediterranean Sea during the Iran Hostage Crisis, the Philippines, photographed the Blue Angels and served on the USS Ranger and USS Forestall. Richard retired from the US Navy in 1986 as a Chief Petty Officer.


After retirement, he accepted a position with Channel 3 in Pensacola as a news videographer. After his wife, Alice was transferred for her career, they moved to New Orleans and later Vicksburg. Richard accepted a position with the US Army Corps of Engineers as an Audio and Visual Production Specialty and retired in 2017.


He enjoyed fishing and cherished spending time with his family. A communicant of Christ Episcopal Church and was a member of the Parish Choir.


Survivors include his wife Alice Read of Vicksburg; daughter, Charyl Read of Vicksburg; and Michael Read of Overton, WY.
