Obituary for Richard Davis Bennett
Richard D. Bennett, 76, died Thursday, December, 27, 2018 at his home. A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at St. Columb’s Episcopal Church in Ridgeland. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 12 Noon.
Mr. Bennett was born on February 18, 1942 in Vicksburg, the son of the late Herman Virgil Bennett and Mary Bates Bennett. He graduated from Provine High School in 1961, where he met his soul mate, Vicki. After graduation, he continued his education at Hinds Community College. A veteran, Mr. Bennett served his country in the United States Marine Corps.
Richard cherished his children dearly. He enjoyed coaching and attending their sporting events and he was involved in every activity they chose to pursue. He never missed a performance or an event. Throughout his life, he worked as a mechanic and insurance agent; he retired from the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he served as a law enforcement officer.
After he retired, Richard enjoyed working with leather, honey-dos, and all things cowboy. Throughout his life, he loved boats of any type and all bodies of water. He had an adventurous spirit, loved to plan trips, ride horses and travel with his family and many church friends.
A faithful communicant of St. Columb’s Episcopal Church, Richard served numerous terms on the Vestry, served as Sunday School Commissioner, enjoyed Men’s Club and led a team in the early 1980s to San Joaquin, Honduras the Episcopal Honduras Medical Mission.
Richard aka “Papa” will be most remembered as a loving husband, beloved father, and devoted grandfather who cherished his grandchildren.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by a daughter, Stacy Lynn Bennett; brother, H.V. “Sonny” Bennett, Jr., and sister, Mary Ellen Hirschenhofer.
Survivors include his high school sweetheart and wife, Vicki Howard Bennett of Madison; son, Richie Bennett and wife Leigh and their daughter, Caroline all of Cumming, GA; daughter, Stephanie Bennett Mahaffey and her daughters, Sydni and Laurel all of Madison; daughter, Robin Bennett Gourley and husband John and their daughter, Raegan and son, Gage all of Madison.
