Obituary for Reverend Charles W. Nicholson, Sr.
Rev. Charles W. Nicholson, Sr. – retired United Methodist Minister – Age 80 Rev. Nicholson crossed the river to meet Jesus on February 1, 2017. Services will be held Friday, February 3, 2017 at Crossgates United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at the church at 9:00 a.m. A celebration service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Chris Cumbest, Rev. Bruce Case, Rev. Earl Greenough, and Rev. Hank Winstead will officiate. Rev. Nicholson was born on October 3, 1936 in Philadelphia, MS. He graduated from Milsaps College and received his Master of Divinity from Emory University. In 1957 he married his soul-mate Dimple Garner Nicholson from Mize, MS. Rev. Nicholson served many churches. The most recent were Central UMC in Meridian, St. Paul UMC in Ocean Springs, First UMC in Columbia, and Eastlawn UMC in Pascagoula. He also served as a District Superintendent and represented the Mississippi Conference at General and Jurisdictional Conferences. Upon retirement, Rev. Nicholson and his wife lived in Lake Junaluska, NC where he served as Chaplain to the Lake Junaluska Assembly. He was loved by his parishioners for being a compassionate and caring pastor. He was also a man of many talents. He taught himself to play the piano, produced many pieces of furniture as a master craftsman, painted as an artist, earned his pilot’s license, and learned to speak Spanish. He was also a whiz with computers – he actually read the manuals before plugging them in! He was preceded in death by his parents T.E. and Sara Presoak Nicholson, two sisters, Mary Lucille and Alene Felder; two brothers, Cecil Nicholson and James Nicholson. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dimple Garner Nicholson, a son, Charles “Chuck” Warren Nicholson Jr (Lisa), a daughter, Carlla Denise Holt (Tom), five grandchildren; Caitlyn Mobley (Josh), Sara Michelle Bogosian (Charlie), Kristin Hawley (Hunter), Dillion Holt, and Griffin Holt; five great grandchildren; Caroline Mobley, Rowan Mobley, Bailey Bogosian, Nicholas Bogosian, and Grayson Hawley. He is also survived by two sisters; Jeanette Wiliams and Georgia Lane (Willie) and one brother Eugene Nicholson. Pallbearers will be Griffin Holt, Josh Mobley, Charlie Bogosian, Hunter Hawley, Randy Lane and Mark Simmons. If you would like to honor Rev. Nicholson, the family asks that you perform a random act of kindness for someone today. In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made to The Methodist Children’s Home or Crossgates UMC.
