Obituary for Peter Radford Jones
Born November 17, 1936 to Allan Grey (Sank) Jones and Alice Creeden Jones of Jackson, MS. Peter grew up in Jackson, attended Forest Hill High School and graduated from Mississippi State University. He also attended Jackson School of Law and Mississippi College School of Law. After college, Peter went to work with O’Neal Steal, Inc. then moved on to work with State Farm Insurance as a claims adjuster. Later in his career he worked for Cook Construction Company, Sunbelt Sealing and retired as a Safety Director for the American Field Service Corporation.
Peter loved performing and was affiliated with numerous community theatres in the area including the Jackson Little Theatre, New Stage Theatre, Clinton Brickstreet Players, Vicksburg Theatre Guild and Millsaps College. He served as president of the Jackson Little Theatre and the Mississippi Theatre Association. His love of acting led him to roles in ETV productions, commercials, and movies, including a role in the TV movie “The North and South.” When he wasn’t centerstage, Peter was putting his other talents to work behind the scenes designing and building sets for productions. In addition to building theatre sets, he put his talents to work creating stage sets for the Jackson Ballet Guild.
Peter’s love of football led him to officiate high school football for 37 years, his final two years dedicated to evaluating and improving the skills of other officials. He was a member of the “Chain Gang” at Memorial Stadium for many years, joining Southeastern Conference officials in overseeing college games. Off the field you would find him rooting tirelessly for his Mississippi State Bulldogs. Always a true fan, he supported them through good years and bad, telling naysayers “there’s always next year.”
A Deacon at Central Presbyterian Church, Peter also served the congregation as Chairman of the Board and church Treasurer. At Central he was an assistant Scoutmaster to Troop 20. An Eagle Scout himself, he was also honored by the scouts as a God and Country recipient and member of the Order of the Arrow. At Central, Peter was also known for his beautiful singing voice. He sang with the church choir and gave numerous solo performances through the years. Whether performing with the Mississippi Opera Guild Chorus, a church choir or family in his living room, Peter’s voice was a gift he generously shared with others. He even had a very special fan club of blue haired church ladies who swooned when he crooned.
Peter enjoyed traveling, going to casinos, listening to all kinds of music, and going to the theatre. He and his wife Sue, who met in Hattiesburg, Mississippi have celebrated 29 years of marriage together. December 23 would have marked 30 years for the couple. They enjoyed many adventures together, spending time with their families and sharing a great meal. He is survived by his wife Sue J. Jones of Braxton, daughter Kathryn Resio (Don) of Jacksonville, FL, daughter Cynde Houston (Mike) of Richland, son Michael Grey Jones (Pam) of Oxford, and daughter Wynde Jones Fitts of Hattiesburg, Step-son Chad Caraway (Jennifer) of Sandersville, step-daughter Kelly Englemann (Branch) of Brandon, and his sister Joanne White Girod of Madision. He is survived by his grand-children Amy Jackson (Tony), Ashley Davidson (Jeff), Darryl Resio (Jennifer), Tamar Goodale, Holly Houston, Nathan Jones, Lora Claire Dickerson (Bill), Kayla Baxter (Brent), Amanda Broyles (Drew), Emily Rowell (Chris), Zach Boykin, Rebecca Green (Chad), Shelby Caraway Aaron Dildine and Ethan Dildine. He is also survived by 20 great grand-children, who gave him great joy. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Allan Creeden Jones.
