Obituary for Peggie Dolores Holmes
Peggie Dolores Stubbs Holmes was born on July 7, 1929 and went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. She was 92 years young. Peggie grew up in Magee, Mississippi, and attended the University of Southern Mississippi. She also studied piano at Belhaven University and later attended Jefferson State Junior College, where she completed a program to become certified in genealogy, one of her greatest passions. She married Seeb Emmit Holmes on October 29, 1949. They lived in many cities and states across the country, including a long stint in Birmingham, Alabama, before making their home back in their native Mississippi for the remainder of their 58 wonderful years together. After Seeb’s passing, Peggie remained in the greater Jackson area working on her life story, writing a religious article, writing poetry, designing a new type of genealogy sheet, as well as a beautiful letter to her children and grandchildren. Among the precious words in her letter to her posterity, she made absolutely sure her family (born and yet to be born) knew how much she loved them unconditionally and would be praying and watching over them even after she passed. She also was emphatic in wanting them all to know how much God loved them and shared her testimony of the gospel, as she always had every chance she could. First and foremost Peggie Holmes was a truly good and faithful servant of the Lord.

Peggie was also a dearly beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to all who knew her. Despite her large family, she always made time for everyone and tirelessly served her family, church and community. She assisted Seeb in many of his entrepreneurial endeavors and even served as his secretary at his law office in the mornings. An avid gardener with a love of flowers, Peggie was particularly skilled at floral arranging and made beautiful arrangements for church every week, as well as for several weddings and conferences. She always said this was for her own enjoyment in service to others and never would accept compensation. She served as a Sunday school teacher and Relief Society President at her church for many years; though she always led a life of service, even when not serving in these roles so dear to her. In keeping with her love of family, Peggie was particularly driven by and gifted at genealogy and all things family history. She spent countless hours working on her and Seeb’s family trees as well as teaching others about genealogy. Peggie enjoyed reading scripture daily as well as religious books and TV programs. Christmas time was her favorite season, and she listed to Christmas music and watched Christmas movies all year round. She also enjoyed cooking and entertaining, whether it be throwing large dinner parties or simply cooking for the innumerable family members and guests at her home on any given evening.

Peggie remained so humble despite her beauty and numerous God given talents and blessings, the latter of which she shared so freely with others. Always leading by Christian example, Peggie’s kind, loving and generous spirit extended beyond just biological family. As a devoted wife and mother to four daughters, Peggie and Seeb still had so much love in their hearts to share, they adopted a son. Peggie has loved on, prayed over, mentored, and provided every kind of support imaginable for the lives of so many people and they were all “family” to her. Peggie’s loving home was always a safe place for anyone needing love, support, shelter, refuge and of course her famous biscuits and gravy. At different times, Peggie and Seeb had over 60 members of the family or friends of the family living in their home for a week, several months or even years. In Birmingham, Alabama, their home was laughingly referred to as the “Holmes Hotel” by some of the guests.

She truly had a smile that would light up a room, warm embrace for all and softly spoken words and prayers that could evoke the most calming, safe and serene feeling despite whatever storm you were weathering. These things and many more are reasons why she will be so deeply missed; yet her loved ones rejoice in knowing she is happy, healthy, reunited with her eternal companion and many loved ones; safe in the warm embrace of her beloved Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth and Theodore Stubbs, her beloved step mother, Beulah Stubbs, her husband, Seeb Emmit Holmes her son, Dana Jackson Holmes, her sister, Iva Dell Lack, and her granddaughter Alecia Anderson Shields.

She is survived by her children, Tanja Adams (Mike) of Madison, Ms, Cretia Hill (Steve) of Brandon, Ms, Dell Holmes of Bountiful, Utah and Seeba Benson of Brandon, Ms; 18 grandchildren, 30 great grand children, and 2 great, great grandchildren.
