Obituary for Paula Leigh Pearson
Paula Leigh Pearson, 84, of Jackson, died Wednesday, March 24, 2021, in her home of 55 years. Born in 1937 in Grenada, MS, to John Maxwell Leigh and Beulah McClain Leigh and grew up in Duck Hill, MS. She studied education and music at Mississippi State College for Women. After school, she moved to Jackson, MS, where she taught first grade at McWillie School. In 1963, she married the love of her life, Horace Holcomb “Mickey” Pearson.
After raising her children, Paula worked for McRae’s Department Store as a buyer, where she picked up a love for fashion that she carried with her throughout her life. She later volunteered in the ICU waiting room at Baptist Hospital, where she enjoyed sitting with families and helping them through difficult times.
She was a First Baptist Church member for 62 years and joyfully sang in the choir throughout her time there. She was very proud to have participated in 49 productions of Carols by Candlelight, her favorite tradition at First Baptist, along with teaching high-school Sunday School and attended Bible study faithfully.
Paula served on the Board of Living Services for 15 years and remained as a lifetime sustaining board member, where she enjoyed engaging with the senior citizen community. She served as a mentor for the Global Leadership Institute Mentor program at Jackson Prep, where she delighted in being involved in young people’s lives.
Paula was a loving mother to three children, Leigh Harwell (Bill), Elizabeth Liles, John Pearson (Laura), and is survived by seven grandchildren she adored. She was predeceased by her husband, Mickey, of 20 years.
A memorial service will be held, Sunday, March 28 at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church Jackson. FBC requests social distancing and masks.
