Obituary for Mildred “Millie” Booth DeGuire
Millie went home to the Lord on July 23, 2020. She passed away peacefully at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS.
Millie was born in Monticello, MS, on June 19, 1936, delivered at home by her Uncle John “Doc” Wilson. She was a lifelong Methodist, secure in her faith in Jesus Christ.
Also known as “Meb”, she was an honor graduate of Monticello High School where she was in numerous clubs, was a cheerleader, and a drummer in the band. She attended Draughon's Business College in Jackson, MS, where she was an honor student and the business manager of the college newspaper.
Millie lived in Appleton, WI, for many years. She also lived in Montgomery, AL, and Waukegan, IL, before returning to Jackson in 1979.
Always ready to listen, she was a fun-loving and supportive mother who enjoyed taking her children to parks and riding bikes. Music brought her so much joy; her eclectic taste and love of music was instilled in all of her children.
Millie spent a lifetime building her career, beginning as an executive secretary. She worked in career placement, customer service, insurance claims, and sales, and excelled at all, winning professional awards throughout her working years. She was also an admissions counselor at both business colleges and a junior college, where she loved helping her students plan for the future.
Millie was passionate about current events, politics, music and sports. She was an avid Green Bay Packers and college football fan. She enjoyed caring for her beloved pets, spending time in the garden, working on art projects, shopping, traveling and eating out. What she loved most, however, were hugs from her grandchildren.
Millie DeGuire is preceded in death by her father James Vester Booth; mother Mildred Newton Booth; brother James Henry Booth; sister-in-law Ruby Covington Booth; and brother-in-law Clarence Edward Akers, Jr.
She is survived by her sister Gwen Booth Akers of Brandon, MS; daughter Pamela Holdorf Vacketta of East Lansing, MI; daughter Wendy Holdorf McNulty (Pat) of Madison, MS; son David H. DeGuire, Jr., of Brandon, MS; granddaughter Kristen E. Vacketta (Dan Kallish) of Santa Clara, CA; grandson Andrew J. McNulty of Madison, MS; grandson David L. DeGuire of Brandon, MS; a nephew and nieces; and great nieces and great nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to all the professionals who cared for Millie in her last days, and especially to the exceptional staff at Hospice Ministries. Memorials may be made to Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland, 450 Towne Center Blvd, Ridgeland, MS 39157.
