Obituary for Max Harold McDaniel
Max Harold McDaniel, 80, died April 19, 2016. He was born in Sandersville, MS, to Harold Edward and Elizabeth Freeman McDaniel on November 2, 1935. He grew up in Jackson. At Central High he was No. 1 on the tennis team and helped end Meridian’s long domination in high school tennis. He graduated from Millsaps College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, No. 1 singles player on the tennis team, quarterback on the KA intramural football team, and a member of the men’s literary honorary.
Max received his MS in psychology at Ole Miss and his Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology at Purdue. On August 19, 1961, he married Sandra Miller in Greenwood. Max worked for Bell Aerosystems in Buffalo, NY and then as a psychology professor at University of Georgia and USM.
Max was founding partner of Morris & McDaniel Management Consultants in Jackson. He was a champion tennis player, known by his tennis friends as a “touch” player. He played with precision and finesse and won many state championships. He and his son Ed reached the finals of the father-son Equitable Family Challenge in Flushing Meadows, NY. He was a longtime member of River Hills Tennis Club, where he enjoyed matches with his best friends. All who knew him marveled at his intellect and keen wit. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sandra; his sons Harold Edward McDaniel II (Carolyn) of Atlanta and John Max McDaniel of Madison; his daughters Clara Cochran (Clayton) of Madison and Elizabeth McDaniel of New York City; and grandchildren John Max McDaniel, Jr., Metts McDaniel, Molly McDaniel, Avery McDaniel, Sam Cochran, Thaddeus Cochran and Lizzie Cochran.
The family wishes to thank the staff of The Blake at Township for their loving care and concern.
