Maurice Ray Walker, 76, died at his home on August 31st, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 5th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Canton, MS from 10:00-11:30 with a scripture service to follow. A celebration of life will commence following the service in the Parish Hall. Maurice was born on January 13th,1947 in Summersville, Kentucky but lived most of his life as a Mississippian.
Maurice played football at Meridian High School, where, as a senior letterman, he led the team at quarterback. He also played basketball, baseball and ran track for the Wildcats. He attended Pascagoula High School prior to Meridian where he also played basketball and quarterbacked the football team. Maurice earned a football scholarship to the University of Southern Mississippi from where he earned his bachelor’s degree. While at USM, he played cornerback on the Golden Eagles football teams from 1965-68. After completing his degree at USM, Maurice worked for Standard Life Insurance Company and eventually worked for Southern Farm Bureau from where he retired.
Throughout his life, Maurice enjoyed watching his Golden Eagles and was a member of the M club for many years. He also enjoyed seeing his old teammates to reminisce about earlier days. In addition to his Eagles, he had a great love of country music and enjoyed line dancing, singing, and playing both the guitar and piano. An avid sportsman he continued to be active athletically playing handball, tennis, and golf throughout his life.
He was a simple man who was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved to spend time surrounded by family and friends. Beside him every step of the way was his beloved wife, Sandra of 57 years, whom he met while at Meridian High School. His family brought him his greatest joy and he always looked forward to time spent with them. His genuine interest in others, combined with his ability to turn ordinary moments into unforgettable memories, made him a true friend in the lives he touched. Maurice embraced life with an infectious sense of humor and an unquenchable passion for sports. He had an uncanny ability to find humor in the mundane, brightening even the gloomiest days with his hilarious anecdotes and quips. His sharp wit, comedic personality and mischievousness were the highlight of many family gatherings. His presence could light up any room, and his laughter was a melody that will forever echo in our hearts.
As we mourn the loss of Maurice let us remember the gift of his laughter, the inspiration of his athleticism, and the warmth of his friendship. May his spirit continue to guide us as we navigate life’s twists and turns, finding humor and joy along the way, just as he did.
Maurice is survived by his wife Sandra of 57 years; daughters Sandy Walker Puckett (Vic) and Malinda Walker Randall (Rafe); grandchildren Haley Puckett Holton (Mason), Bransen Puckett, Brogan Randall, and Ella Randall; Sister Kay Walker Frazier; expectant of his first great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Rev. Dr. James A. and Bea Walker, brothers Ernie Walker and Fred Walker.
Donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Mississippi.
