Mary Edith Brown Young, 84, went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 9, 2023.
Mary was born August 1939, in Meridian, Mississippi as the second daughter of Ellis and Rubye Dyess Brown. Mary graduated from Meridian High School in 1957 and Millsaps College in 1960. At Millsaps, she was a member of the Phi Mu Fraternity and the Millsaps Singers. Mary later earned her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Mississippi State University.
During her last semester at Millsaps, she met “the love of her life, Robert Young” and they were married in August 1960. They were blessed with three loving children and nearly 52 years of marriage.
Mary taught in the Jackson Public Schools for 30 years. She began her teaching at Sykes Elementary and Duling Elementary Schools. She taught at McLeod Elementary School for the remaining 25 years of her career. Mary loved teaching children!
Mary and Robert were active members of Wesley Methodist Church during the early years of their marriage, then Christ United Methodist Church as their children got older, and St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in their later years.
Mary loved family gatherings having all the children and grandchildren spend time together. This certainly included holidays, but any night of the week was perfectly fine. There was no need for a labeled holiday. When the grandchildren entered the family Mary became “Granny” and there was a newfound joy in her heart. Granny could not get enough time with any of them. She loved to spoil them, watch them grow, and become uniquely themselves.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Robert R. Young Sr., her parents Ellis and Rubye Brown, her sister, Alma Virginia Brown, and grandson, Robert R. Young, III (Trey).
Mary is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren – Robert Young, Jr. (Ginny), Lauren (Michael) Moore, Mitchell Moore, Kinsley Moore, Rebecca Young; Renee (Eric) Fleming; Randy (Melody) Young, Denton Young, David Young, and Daniel Young.
A celebration of life will be held at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, Friday, September 15, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, Mary wished to have memorials made to the Christ’s Cupboard or Children’s Ministry at St. Matthew’s UMC, 7427 Old Canton Road, Madison, MS 39110.
Mathew 7:12 - So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
