Obituary for Martha H. Collins
Martha H. Collins, 78, died on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. A native of Oakland, MS, born October 10, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Mason and Hazel Hughes. She was a graduate of the University of Mississippi and was a Registered Nurse. She began her career as a staff nurse at Baptist Hospital and ultimately became the Head Nurse of their CDC Unit. A longtime advocate to those suffering from alcoholism and addiction, Mrs. Collins joined the staff of the MS Board of Nursing as the first Recovering Nurse Coordinator and was recognized statewide for her efforts in monitoring and guiding recovering nurses. She served as a consultant and interpreter between the Board of Nursing, treatment professionals, recovering nurses and employers. She was a longtime friend of Bill W. and will be remembered for reaching out to touch, change, and save many lives for many, many years. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother. Survivors include her children: son, Joseph Collins, of Colorado; daughter, Karen Cox (Chris); son, Jim Collins, all of Brandon; her twin sister, Mary Roques (Jess) and sister, Nancy Parker, both of Jackson; grandchildren: Chris Cox, Jr. (Melanie); Craigan Lama (Joey); Mason Cox and Alex Cox; great granddaughter, Layla Lama; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation 10:00 a.m. Wednesday followed by memorial services at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Flowood. An evening visitation will also be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sebrell Funeral Home in Ridgeland. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Harbor House Chemical Dependency Services, Post Office Box 2917, Jackson, Ms. 39207
