Marshall Ray Magee
Beloved husband, father, and friend died Saturday, January 13, 2024, at his home in Jackson, Mississippi.
Marshall was born to Camille Wahl and Marshall Ray Magee on August 17, 1946, in Bogalusa, Louisiana. He was reared in Jackson, Mississippi by his mother’s sister Magetta Magee and her husband Melvin Fortenberry. He attended Bailey Junior High and graduated Murrah High School with the Class of 1964. He attended Mississippi College where he studied marketing. Marshall began his radio career in high school which would become his love and passion for life. As radio personality Lee Marshall on WRBC, he touched many friends and lifetime fans.
On January 21, 1967, he married Sheryl Lee Sims who is the daughter of Beverly Roselle Floyd and Richard Dale Sims. They had twins, Stacy and Richard, in September of 1967. In 1968 the family moved to Gainesville, Florida where he worked on air and as sales manager for WGGG. In 1970, they moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi where he worked as the vice president and general manager for WXXX. In 1975, the family moved back to Jackson where Marshall would begin his illustrious career with WJDX, WZZQ, and WMSI. In 1986, Marshall and Sheryl would move to Augusta, Georgia where he served as president of Marcom-Keymarket Communications. In 1990, they moved to Birmingham, Alabama where he worked as director of operations for Sun Group Communications. In 1991, he and Sheryl returned to Jackson where he took on the role of president and general manager of WLIN and WLRM. In 1994 he became president and general manager of WTYX and WLIN. In 2001, he was honored as the chairman of the Mississippi Broadcaster Association. He continued to work in broadcasting for many years following setbacks due to health issues in early the 2000’s.
Marshall was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife Sheryl, daughter Stacy Gloer and her daughter Kathryn, son Richard Magee, his wife Dendy Grider Magee, and their children Davis and Elizabeth. He had one sister who also preceded him in death, Gloria Magee Briggs, whose daughters Judy, Lori, and Viki also survive him.
A graveside service was held on February 17, 2024, on the grounds of Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Marshall is buried alongside Beverly and Richard Sims who he considered his surrogate parents.
Memorials may be made to the Methodist Medical Rehabilitation Center or the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
