Marie Taylor Roby, 93, beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully June 20, 2016. A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, June 23, 2016, at St. James’ Episcopal Church with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Oakridge Hall.

Marie was born outside of Port Gibson in Claiborne County, Mississippi on February 11, 1923. She was educated in the consolidated school at Midway, Hinds Community College and Draughon’s Business School in Jackson.

She worked at both Galloway Methodist Church and at the Jackson State Bank. While working at the bank, she met her future husband, Charlton Roby. He was working there while completing his degree from Millsaps College. They were married on February 19, 1944 at the First Methodist Church in Baton Rouge where Charlton was stationed with the Coast Guard. Marie remained with Charlton as he served posts in New Orleans and San Diego, and then Marie returned to Jackson when Charlton deployed overseas.

After the war, Marie and Charlton spent the next several decades raising their family and taking part in community activities. Marie volunteered at her children’s schools and at Galloway Church. In addition, she served on the inaugural committee of the Arts and Lecture Series at Millsaps College. Marie was a member of the Wednesday Girls and the Town Club.

In 1979, she and Charlton joined St. James’ Episcopal Church and were faithful communicants. They also enthusiastically supported and attended St. Andrew’s Episcopal School events. Marie’s love of gardening and keeping house made her home a place of beauty and warmth where family and friends gathered for holidays, special occasions, or just to enjoy a meal together. Marie was devoted to her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charlton Stevens Roby, her parents Annie Mae and Claude Taylor, and her brothers Fay Taylor and Charles Taylor of Port Gibson. She is survived by her children Charlton Stevens Roby, Jr. (Steve) and his wife Audrey of Tupelo and their children Beth Anne Roby and Marye Stevens Roby, and also her daughter Janet Taylor Roby Wofford (Jan) and her husband John David Wofford, Jr. and their children Taylor Stevens Wofford, John David Wofford III (Trey) and his wife Dorothy, Meriwether Wofford Truckner and her husband Chris, and Alden Marie Wofford Raulston and her husband JEB and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Jody Roby of Boston, Massachusetts, a niece and two nephews.

The family is profoundly grateful to the staff at The Blake at Township and Gentiva Hospice for their kind and gentle care and requests that memorials be directed to Millsaps College, St. James’ Episcopal Church, or St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.
