Obituary for Marie Hellen Morano
Melanie Hellen Morano, 61, passed away on February 8, 2018, at Hospice Ministries in Jackson, MS.Born on February 11, 1956, in East St. Louis, IL, Melanie was the daughter of Nylon Hellen Stone and Jim Hellen. She was raised in Jackson and was in constant pursuit of furthering her education. She attended Forest Hill High School and graduated with the Class of 1974. She went on to attend Mississippi College, earning a Degree in Nursing. She later obtained her Masters in Nursing from University of Mississippi. Later, Melanie continued to further her education at Mississippi College School of Law where she earned a Law Degree. She was working towards her PhD in Nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi when she was diagnosed with brain cancer in November 2016. Melanie’s passion for education led her to work at Hinds Community College School of Nursing as a Teacher of Nursing. She also practiced law at Simmons Law Group PA. Melanie accepted the Lord as a young GA while camping at Camp Garaway. She was a member of Wells United Methodist Church where she loved her time singing in the choir. She also enjoyed gardening, writing, and caring for her pets. Melanie cherished spending time with her friends. Her family and friends will always fondly remember her kindness and compassion, her strength and independence, and her love and laughter. She is preceded in death by her father, Jim Hellen. Melanie was a loving mother to her three children. She is survived by Jess Morano of New Orleans, LA, Selena Morano(Marcus Johnson) of San Diego, CA, and Nick Morano of Jackson, MS. She is also survived by her “fur babies” Casey, Shane, Lucky, and Starr. Additionally, she is survived by her mother, Nylon Hellen Stone of Brandon, MS, brothers Lonn Hellen (Fonda) of Jackson, MS, and Bruce Hellen (Frances) of Woodinville, WA. The memorial service will be held on February 18, 2018, at Wells United Methodist Church at 2019 Bailey Avenue, Jackson, MS, 39213. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. with memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Melanie has donated her body for medical education. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to MD Anderson Glioblastoma Moon Shot Program or to Wells United Methodist Church.
